Diamond Inks Contract with Atlanta
MARTINSVILLE, VA - The
Martinsville Mustangs are proud to announce that two year Mustang
pitcher Scott Diamond has signed a professional contract with the
Atlanta Braves. Diamond, a rising senior at Binghamton University
inked a deal with the Braves last week, ending his college career and
beginning a new one in the professional ranks. Diamond's deal the
Braves included a $50,000 signing bonus and the Braves also agreed to
pick up Diamond's final year of school when he chooses to finish his
degree.
Diamond, a 21 year old lefty will report to the Braves Instructional
League in Orlando in September and after the winter will report to
spring training to determine where he will start the 2008 season.
Diamond, a two year Mustang leads the team in almost all career record
for pitchers including 11 career wins and 127 career strikeouts.
Diamond is the single season record holder with a 0.50 ERA in 2006,
tied for the team lead in wins with six in 2007, struck out a team
record 72 batters in 2007, and held opponents to just a .187 batting
average against during the 2006 season.
"We're very excited and happy for Scott and his family, his
disappointment after not being drafted in June was certainly huge and
for him to compete all summer the way he did to show the scouts what
he was made of this is an excellent reward for all the hard work that
he put in," said Mustangs General Manager Doug Gibson. "We had the
pleasure of having Scott with us for two summers and we knew that
every time he took the mound we were going to get his best effort and
his results certainly showed that." Added Gibson. "The Braves were
around to see Scott later in the season on numerous occasions and that
is pretty much what sealed the deal for him." |
