Mustangs Make It Four In A Row With 9-6 Win Over Steamers

After a back-and-forth first few innings, the Martinsville Mustangs powered their way late to a fourth straight win 9-6 over the Edenton Steamers on Monday night at Historic Hicks Field.

Gavin Weyman (Towson) made his second start of the summer, working into the sixth and picking up his first win. The righty allowed seven hits, five runs, walked two and struck out two.

Trailing 1-0 in the third, the Mustangs (5-5) tied the game when Josh Falk (South Dakota St) laced an RBI double to right. A wild pitch moments later allowed Greg Lowe (Davidson) to strut home for the Mustangs first lead of the night, 2-1.

After a couple of solo homers by the Steamers (2-7) in the bottom of the third, the Mustangs responded with four more runs in the top of the fourth. Daniel Vitello (Mars Hill) shot an RBI single to right to make it 3-2, before second baseman Chase Dawson (Valparaiso) unloaded on a three-run homer to center to bust the game open and make it 6-3 Mustangs.

Ian Hussian (Trinity) worked another impressive 2.2 innings, allowing two hits and striking out four.

After the Steamers trimmed the lead to 6-5 in the eighth, a couple of Edenton infield miscues and a Will Doherty (Dubuque) RBI single pushed the Mustangs lead to 9-5.

Ryan Evans (Grambling St) worked the ninth and picked up his third save in as many tries to secure the win.

Martinsville will have Tuesday off before returning home to face the Peninsula Pilots on Wednesday and Thursday night at Hooker Field. Both games are scheduled for 7:15 p.m.
