Seventh Inning Rally Lifts Mustangs To 7-5 Win Over Asheboro

Seventh Inning Rally Lifts Mustangs To 7-5 Win Over Asheboro

Fueled by twelve hits and a three-run seventh inning, the Martinsville Mustangs powered their way to a 7-5 win over the Asheboro Copperheads on Friday night at McCrary Park.

First baseman Josh Falk (South Dakota State) put the Mustangs on the board when he crushed his fourth homer of the season in the fourth inning, a two-run shot to left to make it 2-0 Martinsville.

Lefty starter Garrett Sendelbach (Ohio Dominican) set the tone, allowing just one run on four hits and striking out two. He wiggled out of a crucial bases loaded jam in the fifth to preserve the Mustangs 2-1 lead.

The Mustangs (11-13) added to their lead when designated hitter Bobby Morgensen lined a bases loaded single in the sixth to make it 3-1. Morgensen finished with three hits and two RBI's.

After the Copperheads (9-15) rallied to tie it 3-3 in the bottom half to the sixth, the Mustangs responded with three runs of their own in the seventh. A Chase Dawson (Valparaiso) RBI single with runners on first and second gave the Mustangs a 4-3 lead, and a Falk RBI double followed by a Morgensen RBI single pushed the Mustangs ahead 6-3.

Leading 6-5 in the eighth, closer Ryan Evans entered with two outs and worked the Mustangs out of the jam. After an insurance run in the ninth on a sac-fly by Sage Bruhl (Richmond), Evans was able to seal the deal in a 1-2-3 bottom of the ninth to pick up his sixth save of the season.

Martinsville will finish the first half of the season on Saturday night at High-Point Thomasville. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
