Powered by a two-out eighth inning rally, the Martinsville Mustangs squeaked past the Peninsula Pilots 3-2 on Tuesday night at War Memorial Stadium in Hampton to remain perfect in the second half.
Trailing 2-0 in the sixth, the Mustangs (15-14, 4-0) put a couple runners on before Sage Bruhl (Richmond) was able to trot home on a wild pitch to cut the deficit to 2-1. Left fielder Romero Harris (Indiana State) grounded out to second base to score AJ Kloehn (Richmond) from third to tie the game in the next at bat.
Righty starter Lowell Schipper (Richmond) went a season-high seven innings, allowing just two runs on six hits. He struck out six and walked one.
Following a couple of walks in the top of the eighth, first baseman Bryce Bisenius (Wayne State) shot a two-out RBI single to right to bring home the go-ahead run and give the Mustangs their first lead of the night, 3-2.
Reliever Ian Hussian (Trinity) entered in the bottom of the eighth, and continued his solid work out of the bullpen. The righty pitched the final two innings, allowing no hits and striking out three to lock down the Mustangs comeback win.
Martinsville will continue the road trip with a July 4th contest at High-Point Thomasville on Wednesday night. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
