Mustangs Fall In Ten Innings To Pilots

Despite rallying to tie the game in the eighth, the Martinsville Mustangs fell 6-5 to the Peninsula Pilots on Thursday night in Hampton at War Memorial Stadium.

The Mustangs (15-16, 4-2) jumped ahead early when Chase Dawson (Valparaiso) doubled home a first inning run to make it 1-0. Catcher Nick Ciandro (Cal State Fulleton) smashed his first home run of the summer, a two-run shot in the second to make it 3-0 Martinsville.

The Pilots squeaked across three runs in the home half of the third however, to tie things up 3-3.

Lefty starter Tyler Smith (Cal State Fullerton) allowed five runs on nine hits in seven innings of work. He struck out six and walked one.

Trailing 5-3 in the eighth, the Mustangs put a couple runners on base with two outs before taking advantage of a Pilots throwing error to trim the deficit to one and then got an RBI single by Joe Boyle (Indiana St) to tie things up 5-5.

Reliever Kyle Hansen (Flagler) tossed an impressive home half of the eighth inning, striking out the side to keep the knotted up.

The game remain tied 5-5 until the tenth inning when the Pilots were able to manufacture a run on a sac-fly to walk it off, 6-5.

Martinsville will continue the road trip on Friday night with a first place battle against the Wilson Tobs at Fleming Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
