Offense Powers Mustangs To 7-5 Win Over Steamers Before All-Star Break

Fueled by a four-run sixth inning, the Martinsville Mustangs downed the Edenton Steamers 7-5 on Saturday night at Historic Hicks Field in the final contest before the CPL All-Star break.

After the Steamers grabbed a two-run first inning lead, the Mustangs (5-2, 16-16) responded with one in the third on an RBI double by Parker Chavers (Coastal Carolina) to cut into the deficit.

Following a Chavers walk and a Chase Dawson (Valparaiso) single to begin the sixth inning, the Mustangs exploded for four runs when Josh Falk (South Dakota St) and Joe Boyle (Indiana St) smashed back-to-back RBI doubles to make it 4-2.

Shortstop Jake Lorenzini (Wayne State College), as part of a season best 4-for-4 night at the plate, followed with an RBI double of his own to make it 5-2 Martinsville.

Righty starter Addison Domingo (Point Park) made his return to the mound, allowing only two runs on two hits and striking out eight in six solid innings of work.

The Mustangs pushed their lead to 7-2 at the stretch, before the Steamers responded with three runs in the bottom half of the seventh to make things a little more interesting.

Leading 7-5 in the ninth, closer Ryan Evans (Grambling St) entered and worked around a one-out walk and single to secure his league-leading ninth save of the summer.

Martinsville, now at 5-2 in the second half, will return to action on Wednesday, July 11 at High-Point Thomasville.
