Mustangs Fight Back, Fall Short In Final Meeting With Steamers 8-6

Despite rallying for three runs in the ninth inning, the Martinsville Mustangs couldn't complete the comeback against the Edenton Steamers in the teams final trip to Historic Hicks Field on Friday night.

The Mustangs (6-10, 17-24), fell behind 1-0 in the second but a Chase Dawson (Valparaiso) groundout in the third tied things up 1-1.

Lefty starter Garrett Sendelbach (Ohio Domincan) allowed three runs on three hits and walked four in four innings of work.

Trailing 3-1 in the fifth, Dawson grabbed his second RBI of the night with a base knock to right to trim the deficit to just one.

The Steamers (6-8, 18-22) broke it up open in the home half of the sixth however, batting around and scoring four times to take a commanding 7-2 lead.

After both teams added one more run, the Mustangs entered the ninth down 8-3. With heavy rain falling, the Mustangs loaded the bases with nobody out and forced the Steamers into a pitching change. Following a wild pitch that allowed catcher Joe Milwee (Pitt C.C) to cross home, both Dawson and Romero Harris (Indiana St) notched RBI singles to make it an 8-6 game.

With the tying run on second base, the Mustangs were unable to pickup another hit and dropped their fifth straight game.

Martinsville will return to action on Saturday night, traveling to Asheboro to face the Copperheads. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
