Schipper, Bats Power Mustangs To 10-0 Win Over Tobs

Returning to action for the first time in five days, the Martinsville Mustangs powered their way to a 10-0 shutout win over the Wilson Tobs on Thursday night at Historic Fleming Stadium.

Righty starter Lowell Schipper (Richmond) set the tone, allowing just two bloop hits in seven innings and striking out a season-high 12 batters on 114 pitches in seven innings of work . It was the second straight start in which he has recorded 11 or more strikeouts. 

The Mustangs (8-10, 19-24) opened the scoring in the first inning when Romero Harris (Indiana St) chopped an infield single to short with the bases loaded to make it 1-0. Cross Factor (Oklahoma St) reached on a Tobs infield error soon after to make it an early 2-0 Mustang lead.

In the second, Chase Dawson (Valparaiso) added another Mustangs run on an RBI single up the middle to make it 3-0. Dawson finished with four singles, two RBI's and a stolen base. He leads the Coastal Plain League in hits (59) and in batting average. 

Leading 3-0, the Mustangs added runs in the sixth, seventh and eighth innnings and mashed out 15 hits. Richard Ortiz (Grambling St) laced a two-run single in the eighth and Factor singled up the middle in the ninth and came all the way around to score on a Tobs error to make it 10-0.

Reliever Charles Hasty (Wayne St College) finished off the final two innings, striking out the side in the ninth and allowing just one hit. 

Martinsville will return home on Friday night for a doubleheader with the High-Point Thomasville HiToms. First pitch in Game 1 is scheduled for 6:15 p.m.
