Mustangs Fall Short 10-7 On Opening Night In Wilson

Despite jumping ahead in the first inning, the Martinsville Mustangs dropped a 10-7 decision to the Wilson Tobs on Opening Night at Fleming Stadium on Thursday.

The Mustangs (0-1) took advantage of three Tobs errors in the first inning to grab a 1-0 lead before Wilson responded by sending eight men to the plate and scoring three times in the home half.

Righty starter Tom Butler (Occidental) allowed three earned runs on five hits in four innings of work.

Trailing 3-1 in the second, sophomore outfielder Tyler D'Alessandro (Salem) roped a two-out double to the gap in right-center to trim the deficit to 3-2.

After the Tobs (1-0) built up a 7-2 lead, Tyler Riebock (Ouachita Baptist) crushed a three-run homer over the wall in right to get the Mustangs within 7-5.

Right-handers Evan Dix (Queens) and Sam Kaplan (Mars Hill) both worked two innings of relief for the Mustangs, allowing a combined six runs on five hits and striking out three.

The Mustangs fought back in the ninth when a Trey Woosley (Frontier CC) sac-fly and a Casey Harford (UT-Martin) single plated two runs, but the comeback effort fell short.

Martinsville returns to action on Friday night in the home opener at Hooker Field. First pitch against the Tobs is scheduled for 7:15 p.m. Purchase your tickets here
