Lipetzky, Bats Power Mustangs To 11-3 Win Over Pilots

Lipetzky, Bats Power Mustangs To 11-3 Win Over Pilots

Right-hander Jake Lipetzky (Oklahoma Baptist) tossed five scoreless innings and outfielder Josh Smith (Georgia State) smashed a second inning grand slam as the Martinsville Mustangs cruised to an 11-3 victory over the Peninsula Pilots at War Memorial Stadium on Saturday night.

The Mustangs (1-2) jumped ahead in the first inning after Colin Allman (Newberry) and Smith drew back-to-back walks off Pilots starter Charles Hall. Allman later scored on a wild pitch to make it 1-0.

After the Mustangs loaded the bases in the second, Allman singled home another run to push the lead to 2-0. With the bags still full, Smith smashed a line drive grand slam over the wall in left to make it 6-0 Martinsville.

Allman reached base four times in the game and made an excellent one-handed scoop and throw from shortstop for the final out of the seventh, while Smith collected four RBI, two hits and drew two walks.

Lipetzky, a rising senior, recorded his first win of the summer, allowing only one hit in five innings of work and striking out seven.

Lefty Stone Selby (Belmont) worked his first two innings of the summer on the mound, allowing one hit, a run on a balk call and fanning two. Relievers Ryan Evans (Grambling State) and Calvin Marley (Wichita State) tossed the eighth and ninth innings respectively.

Leading 7-2 entering the ninth, the Mustangs pulled away by putting up a four-spot in the top of the ninth. A two-run double off the bat of Kenny Bergmann (Newberry), an RBI single by Matt Ballance (Virginia Tech) and an RBI groundout by Dalton Lansdowne (Newberry) helped the Mustangs secure their first victory of the 2019 season.

Martinsville returns home on Monday night to face the High Point-Thomasville HiToms in a doubleheader at Hooker Field. First pitch in Game 1 is scheduled for 6:15 p.m. Purchase your tickets here
