Despite a stellar outing from righty starter Davis Palermo (North Carolina), the Martinsville Mustangs couldn't overcome a three-run sixth inning in a 5-1 loss to the Macon Bacon at Luther Williams Field on Wednesday night.
Palermo, making his second start of the summer, allowed only one hit and struck out five in five innings of work.
After the Bacon (6-4) scratched across a run on a wild pitch in the fourth, Macon added three more on a two-run triple and sac-fly in the sixth to make it 4-0.
The Mustangs (3-6) scored their only run in the seventh when Matt Ballance (Virginia Tech) trotted home on a passed ball to trim the deficit to 4-1.
Macon added an insurance run in the ninth to secure a 5-1 victory in the first-ever meeting between the two squads.
Martinsville returns to action on Thursday night in Lexington County. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. Listen to the game on the Mustangs Baseball Network here.
