Mustangs Swept In Doubleheader Against Copperheads

For the first time this summer, the Martinsville Mustangs dropped both games of a doubleheader against the Asheboro Copperheads on Monday night at Hooker Field.

Right-hander Calvin Bush (Concordia TX) made his third start of the season in Game 1, allowing only two unearned runs and striking out eight in six innings of work.

An RBI groundout by Kenny Bergmann (Neberry) put the Mustangs up 1-0 in the fourth, but the Copperheads scored twice in the sixth and added an insurance run in the seventh to grab a 3-1 victory in the first contest.

In Game 2, Asheboro scored two first inning runs off starter Charlie Darnall (Delta State) before Martinsville responded with a Casey Harford (UT-Martin) RBI single and a Jack Capobianco (Belmont) RBI grounder to tie it 2-2 in the home half.

Darnall worked one out into the fifth and allowed four runs on nine hits, while striking out four.

Tyler Riebock (Ouachita Baptist) had three hits in the second contest, including a game-tying single in the fifth.

With the score knotted up 4-4, the Copperheads scratched across a run on sac-fly in the sixth and hung on for a 5-4 win to complete the sweep.

Martinsville (7-14) travels to Hampton to face the Peninsula Pilots at 7:05 p.m. on Tuesday night before returning home Thursday, June 27 for City of Martinsville Night at 7:15 p.m. vs. Edenton.
