Five-Run Third Dooms Mustangs In 6-5 Loss To Pilots

Five-Run Third Dooms Mustangs In 6-5 Loss To Pilots

Despite rallying back from a 6-2 deficit in the eighth, the Martinsville Mustangs fell short 6-5 against the Peninsula Pilots on Tuesday night at War Memorial Stadium in Hampton.

Right-hander Davis Palermo (North Carolina), named to the 2019 CPL Select Team on Monday, made his fourth start for the Mustangs and allowed five runs, all in the third inning on five hits, while walking two and striking out two.

The Mustangs (7-15) grabbed a 1-0 lead in the second when Jack Sigrist (Wichita State) hit a sac-fly to right field. Peninsula responded however, scoring five times on four hits in the home half of the third to take a commanding 5-1 lead.

After back-to-back doubles by Josh Killeen (Wichita State) and Jackson Sisk (Georgia State) trimmed the deficit to 5-2 in the fourth, the Pilots added an important insurance run in the bottom of the sixth.

Trailing 6-2 entering the eighth, the Mustangs used four consecutive walks and a Sigrist two-out, two-run single to make it a 6-5 ballgame but Martinsville couldn't push across the tying-run from third in the ninth and dropped a fifth straight game.

Martinsville returns to action on Thursday, June 27 at Hooker Field against the Edenton Steamers. First pitch on City of Martinsville Night is scheduled for 7:15 p.m.
