Bats Come Alive As Mustangs Down Steamers 9-5

Fueled by a 13-hit performance, including four from outfielder Jack Sigrist (Wichita State), the Martinsville Mustangs snapped a five-game losing skid with a 9-5 win over the Edenton Steamers on Thursday night at Hooker Field.

After Tyler Riebock (Ouachita Baptist) gave the Mustangs a 1-0 lead on an RBI single in the first, Martinsville exploded for five more runs in the bottom of the second.

A two-run double by Dominic Cox (Rice), a Steamers infield error and a two-run single from Casey Harford (UT-Martin) gave the Mustangs a commanding 6-0 lead.

Right-hander Jake Lipetzky (Oklahoma Baptist) made his third start of the summer and allowed four runs on seven hits but struck out nine in 5.1 innings of work.

The Mustangs (8-15) pushed across three more in the fifth when Sigrist doubled home a run and catcher Hank Moore (Lincoln Memorial) singled home two more runs to make it a 9-1 game.

Edenton made things interesting with three runs in the sixth and one more in the seventh to trim the deficit to 9-5, but reliever Charles Hasty (Wayne State College) entered in the eighth and finished it off.

Hasty didn't allow a hit and struck out two in the final 1.1 innings of work.

Martinsville travels to Edenton on Friday for a doubleheader, with Game 1 being a continuation of a postponement from June 9. The Mustangs finish the first half of the season on Saturday, June 29 at Wilson.
