Despite trailing 9-6 entering the ninth, the Martinsville Mustangs rallied for a thrilling 14-9 comeback victory over the High Point-Thomasville HiToms to open the second half at Finch Field on Sunday night.
Right-hander Charlie Darnall (Delta State) made his third start of the summer, allowing two runs on three hits and striking out three in three innings.
After the lead was trimmed to 3-2 in the fourth, Tyler Riebock (Ouachita Baptist) blasted a two-run homer to make it a 5-2 game.
The HiToms (0-1, 10-16) stormed back in the fifth to grab a 6-5 lead, but Trey Woosley (Frontier CC) homered for the first of three times on the night to tie it 6-6 in the seventh.
Righty Ryan Evans (Grambling State) entered the game in the eighth and allowed a three-run homer that put the Mustangs in a 9-6 hole.
The Mustangs responded in the ninth however, scoring three times themselves on a second home run from Riebock and a two-run shot from Woosley to even the game 9-9.
After outfielder Josh Smith gunned down the winning run at the plate in the bottom of the ninth, the Mustangs exploded for five runs, including another two-run homer from Woosley in the 10th to cruise to a third straight victory.
Martinsville returns home for the first time in the second half on Monday, July 1 to face the Forest City Owls. First pitch is scheduled for 7:15 p.m.
