Despite rallying to tie the game 3-3 in the fifth, the Martinsville Mustangs fell short 4-3 against the Savannah Bananas in front of 4,320 at Historic Grayson Stadium on Wednesday night.
Righty Davis Palermo (North Carolina) made his fifth start of the summer, allowing three runs on four hits while walking five and striking out two in five innings of work.
After the Mustangs tied it 1-1 in the top of the third on an RBI sac-fly by Colin Allman (Newberry), the Bananas responded with two runs in the home half to grab a 3-1 lead.
In the fifth, left fielder Tyler Riebock (Ouachita Baptist) came through with a clutch two-out, two-run single to even things up 3-3. The left-handed hitter now holds the team lead in RBI with 19.
With a runner on third in the bottom of the seventh, the Bananas scratched across the go-ahead run on a wild pitch from righty Sam Kaplan (Mars Hill) and the Mustangs were unable to string anything together in the final two innings.
Martinsville (2-2, 12-18) finishes the road trip on Thursday night at Asheboro. First pitch against the Copperheads is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. Listen on the Mustangs Baseball Network here.
