Lipetzky Lifts Mustangs Past Copperheads 3-1

Lipetzky Lifts Mustangs Past Copperheads 3-1

Fueled by a six inning, two-hit performance out of righty Jake Lipetzky (Oklahoma Baptist), the Martinsville Mustangs squeezed past the Asheboro Copperheads 3-1 on Thursday night in front of 2,213 at McCrary Park to finish off a three-game road trip.

Lipetzky allowed only one run on two hits and struck out nine in picking up his second win of the summer.

The Mustangs (3-2, 13-18) opened the scoring in the second when right fielder Trey Woosley (Frontier CC) smashed his team-high sixth home run of the season to right-center to make it 1-0.

After Asheboro tied things up 1-1 in the bottom half of the second, the Mustangs took advantage of a Copperheads' error in the fourth to retake a 2-1 lead.

A wild pitch in the seventh allowed Kenny Bergmann (Newberry) to score from third and gave Martinsville a big insurance run.

With the Mustangs ahead 3-1, the Copperheads (1-3, 12-18) put together a bases loaded, two-out rally in the eighth. After right-hander Charlie Hasty (Wayne State College) entered the game, a diving snag by Woosley on a liner to right kept Asheboro off the board.

Hasty struck out the side in the ninth for a four-out save, his third of the season.

Martinsville returns home to Hooker Field on Friday night, July 5 at 7:15 p.m. to face the North Division rival Wilson Tobs. Purchase your tickets for Salute the Troops Night and a postgame fireworks show here.
