Copperheads Blow By Mustangs 13-7

The Martinsvillle Mustangs dropped a fifth straight game 13-7 to the Asheboro Copperheads on Monday night at Hooker Field.

After both teams scratched across a run in the first, Asheboro put up a four-spot in the second inning and added another in the fifth to take a commanding 6-1 lead.

Righty starter Davis Palermo (North Carolina) allowed five earned runs on just three hits while walking four and striking out four in five innings of work.

The Mustangs (4-7, 14-23) clawed back into the game with two runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth to make it 6-5. Jack Sigrist (Wichita State) and catcher Josh Killeen (Wichita State) both had big RBI singles to trim the deficit to just one.

Trailing 6-5 entering the seventh, the Copperheads pulled away by scoring four times in the seventh and three more in the eighth.

RBI singles by Dominic Cox (Rice) and Josh Smith (Georgia State) made it 13-7 in the bottom of the ninth, but the Mustangs rally fell short.

Martinsville returns to action on the road Wednesday at Forest City. First pitch against the Owls is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. Listen to the game on the Mustangs Baseball Network here
