Right-hander Gavin Weyman, who spent two summers with the Martinsville Mustangs, signed with the Birmingham Bloomfield Beavers of the United Shore Professional Baseball League (USPBL) on July 10 and picked up his first professional win in relief in his debut on July 11.
Weyman finished 1-1 with a 4.71 ERA in four starts for the Mustangs in 2019 and on June 15 worked into the eighth inning against the Edenton Steamers, allowing only two earned runs and striking out six. The righty also made four starts for Martinsville in 2018, securing 16 strikeouts in 21.1 innings of work.
Weyman, a Bridgewater, Massachusetts native, graduated from Towson in May and finished his career with the Tigers as the team's leader in ERA at 3.26. After spending two season at UConn Avery Point, Weyman tossed 131.1 innings, struck out 102 and finished with a 4.11 ERA in 32 career appearances.
Per its website, the USPBL is an independent league based in Michigan, primarily playing at Jimmy John's Field in Utica, about 26 miles north of Detroit. The USPBL was designed as an innovative developmental finishing school for players seeking to make it to the Majors. The teams are comprised of top level college baseball players from around the country.
