Mustangs Split Doubleheader With Pilots

The Martinsville Mustangs settled for the split of a doubleheader with the Peninsula Pilots on Monday night at Hooker Field, picking up a 6-2 victory in Game 1 before dropping the second contest 15-6.

In the first seven-inning game, righty Davis Palermo (North Carolina) made his seventh start of the summer and allowed two runs in the first inning, six hits, walked five and struck out one in 4.1 innings of work.

The Mustangs (6-11, 16-27) tied the game 2-2 in the third on a Jack Sigrist (Wichita State) RBI single and a Josh Smith (Georgia State) RBI groundout. Both finished with two hits in the first contest.

In the fifth, another Smith RBI single, a two-run double from Trey Woosley (Murray State) and an RBI single off the bat of Jack Capobianco (Belmont) helped the Mustangs make it a four-run inning. Woosley finished 3-for-3 with two RBI.

Right-hander Charlie Hasty (Wayne State College) tossed the next 2.1 innings, allowing no runs on four hits and striking out two to preserve the win.

In Game 2, rising sophomore Austin Elliott (North Carolina) got the start for the Mustangs and allowed seven runs on five hits while striking out four in 2.2 innings.

The Pilots (9-7, 23-21) built leads of 7-0 and 8-1 before the Mustangs stormed back to make it 8-6 in the fourth on the heels of back-to-back bases loaded walks and a two-run single from Sigrist.

Peninsula pulled away however, scoring four more times in the fifth and adding three more in the sixth to earn the 15-6 victory and the split.

Martinsville is off Tuesday but returns home Wednesday night for another doubleheader against the Gastonia Grizzlies. First pitch in Game 1 is scheduled for 6:15 p.m.
