Seven-Run Fifth Inning Pushes Mustangs Past Owls 8-2

Fuled by a seven-run fifth inning, the Martinsville Mustangs knocked off the Forest City Owls 8-2 at Hooker Field on Tuesday night.

Righty Davis Palermo (North Carolina) made his eighth and final start of the season, allowing only one first inning run and striking out three in four innings of work.

Tied 1-1 in the fifth, the Mustangs exploded for seven runs on the heels of a three-run home run by Keith Flaherty (West Chester), a Dominic Cox (Rice) two-run double and a Jack Capobianco (Belmont) RBI single.

Flaherty notched his third multi-hit game in four starts while catcher Kenny Bergmann (Newberry) finished 3-for-3 at the plate with two doubles.

Right-handed relievers Davis Mikell (Castleton) and Ryan Evans (Grambling State) both worked two innings, allowing just three combined hits and one run while striking out seven to finish off the victory.

The Mustangs (8-15, 18-31) are off Wednesday and return home for the final time in 2019 on Thursday, August 1 at 7:15 p.m. to face the High Point-Thomasville HiToms. General admission is FREE for all fans and the final fireworks show of the season will follow the game.
